The retail industry has changed more than ever in recent years with the evolution of social media platforms. In today’s world, you can get the shopping experience on social media, leaving retailers to no longer rely on traditional marketing to reach their audience. We now see social media as the source for brand discovery, research on product quality, and purchase decisions.
A large percentage of consumers today no longer choose to walk into retailers, and would rather just shop online in the comfort of their own home. Platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Pinterest have evolved into retailers in and of themselves. Products are being showcased to consumers via short videos, partnerships with influencers, and livestream product demonstrations.
Since social media is taking over a portion of retail profit, we are seeing the line between content and advertising become more and more blurred. Browsing, reading reviews, watching tutorials, and buying products can all be done via one app. This gives consumers the efficiency they are looking for, while boosting conversion rates for brands.
It is apparent that retailers are undergoing a digital transformation with social media at the center of this shift. Retailers must not rely on traditional marketing alone, they must meet the needs of their consumers on the platforms they love most.
